2007 MML Literature Award winner, Katy of Sky Road, selected for IBBY Honour List

Maskew Miller Longman is pleased to announce that Katy of Sky Road, by Dianne Case and Yvonne Hart, has been selected for the IBBY Honour List to be presented at the IBBY World Congress in Copenhagen as having made a special contribution to recent South African literature for children and young people.

The announcement was made at an event held at the Centre for the Book in Cape Town on Thursday 19 November 2009.

Katy of Sky Road, was the English language category winner of the inaugural Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards.  Winners of the 2007 youth novel competition were announced at a gala awards evening at the Westcliff Hotel in Johannesburg on the 27th September 2007.

How the IBBY Honour List books are selected:

Publishers are asked to submit a copy of each children's book published during the years in question. These books are then reviewed by:

  • the children's book selectors of the Western Cape Library Service
  • the librarians at EDULIS
  • Genevieve Hart of UWC School of Librarianship and her students may also be asked to be involved

Input is received from libraries, schools, friends, email networking and from as many sources as possible. Where publishers fail to submit, the relevant material is sourced through other means, such as EDULIS or the Provincial Library Book selectors.  The information is then collated and the Honour List books are finalised.

Review by Jay Heale (www.bookchat.co.za):

This book has zip and sparkle! (How good to see Dianne Case back in top form – as the Winner of the MML 2007 Literature Awards.) ...a colourful, frisky story of a young girl from Bishop Lavis who loves dancing and loves life. The heart-throb hopes, the unlistened-to conversations, the parental barriers: accurately painted in with a typical teenage decision to make – hip-hop or ballroom dancing? With romantic attachments and dangerous moments involved! It’s moving, exciting, realistic and fun. Duidelik! Cool!
