The announcement was made at an event held at the Centre for the Book in Cape Town on Thursday 19 November 2009.

Katy of Sky Road, was the English language category winner of the inaugural Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards.  Winners of the 2007 youth novel competition were announced at a gala awards evening at the Westcliff Hotel in Johannesburg on the 27th September 2007.

How the IBBY Honour List books are selected:

Publishers are asked to submit a copy of each children's book published during the years in question. These books are then reviewed by:

  • the children's book selectors of the Western Cape Library Service
  • the librarians at EDULIS
  • Genevieve Hart of UWC School of Librarianship and her students may also be asked to be involved

input is received from libraries, schools, friends, email networking and from as many sources as possible. Where publishers fail to submit, the relevant material is sourced through other means, such as EDULIS or the Provincial Library Book selectors.  The information is then collated and the Honour List books are finalised.
