About the Youth Novel Competition

The 11-language Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards came to a celebratory high point at The Westcliff Hotel in Johannesburg on the 27th of September, when the winners of the youth novel competition were announced.

Cheryl Carolus, Patron of the Awards, said that she was honoured to be involved in this important new initiative which is making such a substantial contribution to the development of literacy among South Africa's teenagers and young adults.

Fathima Dada, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Maskew Miller Longman, welcomed guests, who had braved the stormy conditions to celebrate and honour the authors and their exciting new novels. Among the distinguished guests were senior National Department of Education officials, leading academics, members of PANSALB and the National Library Services. Ms Dada explained that this literature award stands out in its commitment to the development of writing in all South Africa's official languages.

The judges, all prominent South African literary figures, awarded 14 prizes in 7 languages.

Cheryl Carolus gave a heartwarming and inspiring address in which she encouraged the writers to continue to tell stories in their own language. She urged the guests to support these new literary works, and called on corporate South Africa to create opportunities to promote and nurture proudly South African literature.

Jane Bursey, MD of Maskew Miller Longman Schools, closed the landmark event by paying special tribute to the many writers who entered the competition and particularly to the talent and commitment of the runners-up and winners.
